Montreal – August 23, 2019
The Concordia Stingers began their season tonight with a defeat at home against the Montreal Carabins.

With threatening skies showing signs of a potential downpour, the Concordia Stingers came unstuck against a solid Montreal Carabins team in U Sports action. In what would be a low scoring affair, with many errors on both sides. Perhaps from early season jitters. Both quarterbacks saw their centers hike balls past them. Luckily both were able to recover the runaway pigskins before a loss of possession.

The Carabins scored first. Reaching the end zone for a converted touch down and a seven point first quarter lead. Concordia would put up three points on a kick. The Stingers briefly thought they had taken the lead on a pass interception, but a flag on the play kept the Carabins on top. The first half ended with a nine to three lead for the Carabins.

The second half saw much of the same pace. The only scoring play came from a field goal attempt as the Montreal Carabins successfully spoiled Concordia’s home opener. The Carabins seemed the better side, but not by much. Football, as the saying goes, is a game of inches and a few extra yards could have yielded a better result for the Stingers. Such is sport. You win some, lose some.

Ultimately the game came down to whichever team committed the least amount of errors, and on this night, that honour will fall to the Montreal Carabins, who defeated the Concordia Stingers by a final score of 12 to 3.

Both teams can reflect on this as a less than perfect beginning to their seasons. Perhaps rusty from the off-season, as it normally does take a little time to get back into the swing of things. However, it is early days and both sides showed the potential for a stronger finish.

Concordia takes on McGill at home on August 30th in the Shaughnessy Cup. While Montreal will face the Sherbrooke Vert Et Or on September 26th.
