In August 2025, the band disclosed that Lindberg had been diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (mouth/pallet cancer) in December 2023, and was receiving treatment, including surgery and radiotherapy.
On 16 September 2025, Lindberg died at the age of 52 following complications related to his ongoing cancer treatment, as confirmed by the band on social media and reported in music press outlets. According to reports, the band had completed work on their forthcoming eighth studio album before his major surgery, with Lindberg recording his vocal tracks in a single day shortly before the procedure.
Today, At The Gates release the first taste of the last works of the great, great Tomas Lindberg. (See below)
“In accordance with Tomas’ wishes; including the album title, sound mix, track order, artwork, and overall presentation The Ghost of a Future Dead remains true to form. It combines the ferocious energy and hard-hitting powerful melodies that is the essence of At The Gates. This album is Tomas’ legacy”.
“The Fever Mask was one of the final songs written for the album and quickly stood out as the natural choice for both the opening track and the first single for ‘The Ghost of a Future Dead’. It perfectly captures the essence of At The Gates, blending raw energy, strong melody and beautiful lyrics by Tomas”.
This is a brilliant track that looks like it will do the legacy of Tomas Lindberg proud, and see he and maybe At The Gates bow out while at the peek of their careers. While there is no word yet on if At The Gates will continue on without Lindberg, which presumably they won’t, having one final recording featuring Lindberg is one hell of a treat and a testimony to a legendary career and life.
