Georgia based duo, Dying Whale, have released a two-track EP named Problem With Immortality ahead of entering the studio to record their sophomore record.

Call it Mathcore, Metallic Hardcore – or whatever you like, Georgia’s Dying Whale are crafting ferocious, heavy yet melodic music. This is a stop-gap between their debut record, 2017’s Last Moments Of Misery, and their new full-length that is currently in the writing stage. At just six minutes in length, we get just enough of a taste to build assumption’s for what is to come. A tease. Yet still enough of a showcasing to build intrigue for what is reportedly en route.

The first track of the pair, Destroyer Of Light, starts off smoothly, with a building introduction before boiling over into a rambunctious soup of slamming hardcore riffs, dissonance and calm bits that include piano interludes. There are harsh and raspy vocals that border on black metal, delivered with a hardcore approach – think along the lines of Underoath’s fantastic sophomore effort, Cries Of The Past.

The approach on Biblical Image is similar to that on Destroyer Of Light, in it also uses well-placed areas of dissonance and a more straight forward hardcore approach. It accounts for just under two minutes of the total six minute running time, but accomplishes its fair share in its limited timeframe. The final half-minute draws on an influence seemingly lifted from The Dillinger Escape Plan, or perhaps from Converge’s Jane Doe. Either way, you get the idea.

“As a band that has been working hard to develop our sound, we have finally hit a point where we are at full steam,” says Matt Zagorski – the bands vocalist, guitarist and bassist. “With the release of these songs, we enter the strongest era of the band.”

“With Eli (Werth) and I at the helm of the ship, there are no obstacles that can stand in our way. Problem With Immortality is themed around the false claims of religion curing mental illness. Both tracks dive into the topic in a different way. Destroyer Of Light is tackling the idea that praying your depression away is a viable option of fixing your problem when in reality there is no simple way of curing this. There is no God up in heaven watching down waiting for you to call him to wash away your suffering. It’s up to all of us in pain to find our own path for relief. Sometimes that negatively affects us like it did for the person Biblical Image is about. It’s about a person in my life that took an excessive amount of pills, to the point of no return. In his mind, he became the God that he was told to pray to. And he was to fulfill the words of the bible at any cost. Since then, he has received the treatment he needed.”

“Coming out of the pandemic, Dying Whale is stronger than ever, says Zagorski. “I spent my stimulus checks accordingly and of course bought recording gear. Eli and I have been working hard on demoing and refining our sound like never before. After a year of unexpected changes, I can’t say exactly what we have in store for the future, just know we are back in full swing, and we both couldn’t be happier to announce that.”

Dying Whale is writing additional new material and will return to the studio this Summer to record their next LP for release in 2022. In the meantime, this two-track slab can be had digitally from Nefarious Industries or from the groups bandcamp page, with a vinyl release to follow some time later in the year.
