Over the past decade, or slightly less; there has been an awesome resurgence of classic death metal and I couldn’t be happier about that!
Bands like Dead Congregation and Six of Swords are bringing back crushing, simplistic riffing with pummeling drums and angry, guttural vocals in a way that brings you straight back to 1995. Fans of out of control guitar tapping and endless drum fills; don’t look here for inspiration because you’re in the wrong record section (don’t let the door hit you on the way out to the tech-death isle).
Gutted Christ fit right into this classic death metal revival quite comfortably. The instruments are raw, drums are un-triggered and natural sounding and the vocals are disgusting and painful just like what you would find on Incantation’s “Blasphemy” album – sickening delivery. With this seemingly analog approach, you can really feel the energy and authenticity in the performance.
With specific respect to the drum production and performance, I am reminded of the Inverted album “the Age of Harvest”; which is a definite plus.

Sure, there might be a loose aspect to the playing style and this isn’t necessarily for everyone these days, but; you can bet your last dollar that what you hear on this album is what you’ll get if you go see Gutted Christ at a gig on stage.
One definite weak point is the Satanic intros and overtones on “The Sower Ov Discord” which are cliché and definitely take away from the quality of the music. The world doesn’t need another Glen Benton.
If you’re looking to reinvent the wheel, the blueprints are not here. What you will get though, is a crushing, catchy and mosh pit inducing slab of classic death metal.
