Lasalle Warriors vs Cumberland Panthers battle for the Cup D’Or

Over the years, Hollywood has released a slew of films based on sporting franchises doing incredible things. Striving in the face of adversity and triumphing where nobody gave them a hope if success. It’s an age old story with a formula that is reheated, re-fried and served up as new again. What the Lasalle Warriors Bantam AAA team capped off this past weekend follows that story-line to a tee.

The entire Warriors season was in jeopardy from the get go due to a lack of players, and eventually they would roll out with just twenty six players. Each match, they faced an adversary with a roster closer to the fifty Mark, yet were unfazed by it all. Week in and week out, they won. Going undefeated for the duration of their season was probably not something anybody expected, but that is what happened.

A week ago, the Warriors steamrolled the Saint Leonard Cougars in a match they dominated from the opening minutes. An early touchdown meant they lead and never once trailed in the match, although a slow start to the second half and an inspired exit from the Cougars made the contest closer than the Warriors might have liked. In the fourth quarter, they were back to their domineering display and went on to hoist the Cup D’Or above their heads.

This lead them to the Inter Provincial Bowl and a meeting with the Cumberland Panthers Saturday past. With the sun setting it began to snow and the winds blew ferociously and frigidly. Now the setting even looked like something from a major motion picture.

Lasalle started off the way they had the weekend before, leaping to an early touchdown and a lead. They quickly doubled their advantage and running over the Panthers, quite literally. At the half they lead by a whopping thirty two to three and had seemed certain to win and win big. But their third quarter mimicked the one from the Saint Leonard game and slowly Cumberland started to come back. The intensity grew and it seemed as if there was a flag on every play.

With a significant lead in hand, Lasalle gained possession of the ball and were content to run out the clock in the dwindling moments of the contest, earning them the game, the title and the Cinderella ending to a fantastic season. Hollywood executives probably won’t be lining up to make a feature out of this story, but this is season these kids will likely never forget.
