The Canadian Extreme Circus, also known as CXC, stops off in Laval
The Canadian Extreme Circus, also known as CXC, featured some of the best FMX and BMX riders in Canada. LP Chabot, the only one in the world doing the mini-flip in motocross. Mike Ouellet the Quebec FMX rising star.
BMX performance featuring 3 times X-Games champion Mike Varga. Jean William Prévost, the six time Canadian and five time American UM champion performed a surreal flat BMX display.

Prior to the show, a special met and greet was arranged where attendees could walk about the course and mingle with the riders and check out the bikes and tractors that would seem to ripping about Place Bell.
With the ice surface now gone, melted away for the offseason months, the ground was slick underfoot. I asked BMXer Jean William Prévost if that would present a challenge and he said he planned to mope the deck using Coca-Cola – and I thought he was joking until low and behold, there he was just before showtime, mopping the ground where he was set to kick off the show with a black substance. Apparently the pop gives enough stickiness to keep a BMX from slipping about beneath a rider – who knew!
One the show had gotten underway, Prévost wowed the crowd with some surreal tricks, none better than his final move, which he call the circus trick, where he rode about the floor while standing on the handle bars of his BMX. My inner-child was stunned and elated at this spectacle. Prévost truly is a star in the realm of flat of BMX.
My personal favorite part of the whole event, to everyone’s surprise including my own, was the lawnmower racing. I was astonished to see these monsters prior to the show, where those that purchased a VIP pass had the chance to meet and greet the riders and get up close with the mean machines that would be performing death defying stunts in the very near future.
Once the lawnmowers revved up their crazy engines, none of which were stock of course, my inner child became my inner demon and I found myself giggling. These machines were beasts! Throwing some much wheel-torque into each and every turn that they were drifting them, whether they had planned to or not. Sheer power on a slippery surface. Glorious. And that smell – gasoline and exhaust fumes. I was seriously in my element the whole time they were on track. Lets call it a track.
The BMX and FMX portion of the event too, was highlight reel stuff. I grew up riding BMX, and once even broke five toes on one when I foot slipped off the pedal and into the spokes of the rear wheel as I rode. That wasn’t my favorite childhood memory, but it makes for good chatter down at the bar. Well, sort of.
While my story is testimony as to why we leave the crazy stuff to the professionals, it was indeed the professionals that the people had come out to see. First, came the BMX riders, who launched themselves from a ramp, down onto another, where they flew through the air pulled off mad stunts, before landing on a giant inflatable ramp that absorbed their bikes and themselves if they came off – and a couple of them did.
The FMX stuff was perhaps the most impressive, and most dangerous part of the show, and the bit that the audience really seemed to be amped up for. Front flips and back flips, a Superman or two, the tricks were incredible and increasing in difficulty and danger with each run. It was a mesmerizing display and one that will certainly stick in the minds of the youngsters in attendance. motorheads in the making!

I will admit though, that I feared that the scoreboard above center ice was frighteningly close to the trajectory of the riders – but at the end of the day, it was a factor in either way. Nor was the pickup truck parked right in front of the inflatable ramp. That’s why I’m a photojournalist and not a stunt rider!
It had been a while since I had the chance to see an extreme motorsport event, and I hadn’t realized how much I had missed it. Maybe, hopefully, once the Stade Olympic repairs are completed, we can get Monster Trucks and the like back! And, of course, bring back the Canadian Extreme Circus. This was a great day.
