Montreal Impact sign Victor Wanyama

The Montreal Impact have made a surprising, high quality acquisition today. The Canadian MLS club announced it had come to terms with Kenyan international midfielder and captain Victor Wanyama as a Designated Player. The move comes following a free transfer with English Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur.

“Victor is an important player with a great career,” said Sporting Director Olivier Renard. “His undeniable experience will also help support the young players and help them progress.”

The importance of having a prestigious manager, such as French superstar Thierry Henry, is beginning to show prominence. Henry earned respect for his skilled play. He took over the management position with Montreal on November 14th, 2019. Henry was the main target of Olivier Renard.

Victor Wanyama in his new kit

“I’m really happy to join an exciting club like the Montreal Impact,” said Wanyama. “The MLS continues to grow every season and I’m looking forward to bringing further awareness to this team, city and league across Africa. When I spoke to Thierry [Henry] and he told me he wanted me to join him in Montreal, I didn’t have to think twice. He has always been a player that I’ve admired, and I am really happy to get the opportunity to work with him and to play a part that can ensure that the Montreal Impact have an improved season and hopefully reach the ultimate stages of the competitions in which we compete.”

At 28 years of age, Wanyama still has a lot of soccer in front of him. This is a signing that could be a pivotal move for the Montreal Impact, who now have a commanding defensive midfielder. And good with size. Victor Wanyama brings a 6’2″ frame down the middle of the field, as well as an impressive amount of experience from some of the best leagues in the world.

Wanyama brings a wealth of experience

Victor Wanyama appeared in 150 Premiership matches for clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton. He was a star player for Celtic is the Scottish Premiership. He also played for Belgian side Beerschot AC.

The native of Nairobi, Kenya also has an impressive international resume. He has scored 7 times in 56 matches. Has worn the captains armband since 2012. Victor Wanyama made his senior team debut at just 15 years old.

Impressive! To say the least.

Surely Wanyama will improve the Impact. Montreal’s new season suddenly has a lot of promise. Only time will tell.

Montreal are coming off a victory in game one. A decisive 2-1 win over New England at home. They next appear away versus FC Dallas on March 7th.
