Montreal signs Catherine Dubois

The long-term injury to Montreal defender Dominika Laskova, who was officially placed on the injury reserve list this morning, has opened the door for Catherine Dubois who today officially signed with the team.

Dubois has played seven games with on two separate ten-day contracts while Laskova recovers from her injuries, and has done well in her time with the team. Earlier today, she played her eighth match with Montreal – but this time after inking a proper contract with the team.

Dubois, 28, native of Charlsburg, Quebec has one goal in eight games so far, and played several shifts this afternoon on Montreal’s top line along side Marie-Phillip Poulin.

Self-described as overcome with emotion on Saturday night when Montreal general manager Danièle Sauvageau called Dubois to offer a standard contract with the team, Dubois quickly called up family members who immediately made plans to attend today’s game at Place Bell where Montreal faced Minnesota.

“I cried, as soon as Daniele told me I was on a full contract and have my chance to play today, I just cried,” Dubois said. “I think it was a bottle of all the emotion and I called my family obviously first, my dad and my mom, and we are an emotional family, so we all cried together.”

“Every day I thought I might not have that chance to play on a full contract,” Dubois said. “You doubt yourself, you wonder, ’what do I do wrong.’ But at the end of the day, I play it because I love it and I couldn’t stop working. I couldn’t stop thinking that maybe one day I will make it.

She stood out with several strong plays, and while she didn’t put up any points on the scoreboard today, played a key role as Montreal held on to withstand a late third period surge from Minnesota who were looking to tie up the game in its waning moments. Montreal were able to hold on, in part due to the raucous sold out crowd that made so much noise that Minnesota mistake it for the horn with seconds left in the game.

Montreal is in action next on Wednesday February 21st in an away match against New York, while their next home game takes place February 28th at the Verdun Auditorium when Ottawa comes to town.
