New England Revolution run over CF Montreal at Stade Saputo

On the final day on May, the New England Revolution visit Montreal’s Stade Saputo, where CF Montreal completed a rough schedule that had them compete eight times this month. A month that hasn’t been particularly friendly.

CF Montreal have struggled to score goals, and moreover, struggled to keep the ball out of their own net. In their most recent home game, CF Montreal blew a two goal lead to LAFC, and had to settle for the draw – which is better than the drubbing they took at the hands of Lionel Messi and Louis Suarez, who each notched a brace as a Inter Miami rolled over CF Montreal by a score of 4 to 2.

Tonight was to be a continuation of recent times.

One again, the rain came cascading down about the grounds of Stade Saputo, soaking those that had turned up to the skin – even through their flimsy rain ponchos. Judging by how the players on the field were sliding about, struggling to find traction on the slick grass, they were having as good of a time of those in the stands were. It has been an unseasonably wet May for Montreal, which certainly hasn’t helped matters for the struggle squad.

In the 36th minute, CF Montreal striker Giacomo Vironi was shown a straight red card for a fairly innocent looking challenge, leaving his team down a man and earning a one match ban for CF Montreal’s next contest. Already struggling to keep pace with New England, going down a man was the beginning of the end for Montreal’s evening.

Just three minutes into the second half, the New England Revolution finally broke the deadlock, when Peyton Miller received a cross from Ilay Feingold about six feet from goal, slotting a left-footed shot just inside the post. The play had been swinging in New England’s favor ever since the rec card was shown to Vironi, and now CF Montreal were in a deep hole, trying to dig themselves back out without a shovel.

Three minutes later, Nathan Saliba was shown a yellow card for a mediocre foul and he too will now miss the next match for CF Montreal.

Feingold doubled the lead just four minutes later, when he took a pass from Matt Polster and booted a left footed shot from the right side of the box to the center of the goal. Montreal’s woes were growing by the minute, and like the rain, there seemed to be no letting up.

New England thought they had scored a third goal in the 67th minute, but it was called back due to Peyton Miller being offside.

In the 87th minute, Feingold tallied again, firing a pass from Miller, a right footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner, that left goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois looking totally deflated.

In total, CF Montreal were handed five cards during the match – four yellows and a straight red, which is a combination of frustration, poor weather, and poor refereeing – it needs saying. A lot of referee Michael Venne’s calls where questionable, to keep it mild.

Both Giacomo Vironi and Nathan Saliba will be ineligible for the next CF Montreal match due to suspensions, further adding to their teams woes. Montreal fans are showing their displeasure, leaving Stade Saputo with a quarter of an hour to go, before CF Montreal had even surrendered that third goal. Already, the stadium had sat half empty, possibly due to the horrid weather or maybe due to the lukewarm play on the field, and now, the building sat virtually empty.

There’s no doubt that something needs to change for CF Montreal, and with time now before their next match, perhaps closed-door meetings will work towards figuring out what it is the team needs to do. For CF Montreal, however, their season looks to be done before its even gotten started.

CF Montreal are now on a little bit of a break, and will next play on June 14th with this visit Shell Energy stadium to take on Houston Dynamo FC. The New England Revolution will also next be in action on June 14 when they take on FC Cincinnati.
