Fizzgigs “Weeeeeeeeeeeee Are The Fizzgigs” Review

Fizzgigs
“Weeeeeeeeeeeee Are The Fizzgigs”
Meter Records
Released : March 20, 2020

Is that the most annoying album name of all time, or what? Are you trying to send my OCD through the roof here, guys? Geez!

Comprised of former Belvedere songwriting duo and members Jason Sinclair and Scott Marshall. It’s no surprise that the overall feel of this record screams Belvedere. Then again, if they sang about committing crimes and broken hearts, I might have said they sound an awful lot like Masked Intruder. They don’t have the ski masks to pull off that kind of heist though.

Apparently, these Fizzgigs are all about fun. That’s their modus operandi; have fun. They do sound like fun, I’ll give them that. Like a throwback to carefree days when discovering new Punk rock bands was done by watching movies like Mallrats. That was fun. Like, remember when what’s his name was all pumped about the Hartford Whalers wrecking some other team on the Sega Genesis? Yeah!

I like to google the bands I’m reviewing while listening to them for the first. Its part of my routine. Just something I’ve done for as long as the tool has been at my fingertips. So I type in Fizzgigs, hit the enter button, and am faced with pictures of screaming balls of fur. The Dark Crystal! Are you kidding me? Turns out, even googling these guys is fun.

So by now, you’ve probably deduced that these guys are all about fun. They’re a happy go lucky Pop punk powerhouse of melodies and hooks. Doing all they can to create ear worms to eat your brain.

I’m going to be a bit of bastard here, and swipe a few words from out of their press release. Because I like the album cover an awful lot. Anybody remember Hot Rod magazine? If I wasn’t so lazy, I would consider researching the cover artist to see if that person had anything to do with that publication. It’ll probably just end up being yet another case of sleep deprivation, though. Oh right, here’s the bit I ripped off!

The cover art of a cartoon character joyfully, if not ignorantly, indulging in a ride down a janky old slide despite being too big. The slide being broken, and the disapproval of waiting onlookers. Fun.

Just how you can write songs about human sacrifice and the end of the world, and still have the end product come up sounding like daisies, is weird. I can’t even fathom how that kind of thing can happen. Yes, here it is. The Fizzgigs are a warm and fuzzy sounding group, built to chase away the blues of the rat-race. Like how you put blinds on a horse, so the poor thing can’t see all the bullshit about him? That’s the Fizzgigs.

The Fizzgigs are… horse blinders? At this point, I think I should head to bed and you should stop reading this.
