The Toronto Raptors will take on the Boston Celtics in Montreal

July 26, 2022

Montreal’s sporting calendar just got a little bit busier, as the NBA today announced that a pre-season match-up between the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics will be coming to town this fall.

It has been four years since the Toronto Rapters last came to Montreal, when they faced the Brooklyn Nets at the Bell Center, home of the NHL’s storied Montreal Canadiens. That was back on October 10, 2018, where the Raptors defeated the Nets by a score of 118 to 91 in front of a boisterous crowd.

Since then, Montreal has gained a professional basketball team, the Montreal Alliance, who are at the tail end of their debut season in the CEBL – the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

The Montreal Alliance are coming off back to back loses against the Newfoundland Growlers, but growing pains in a debut season are to be expected.

The Boston Celtics are a star-studded squad that includes players such as Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown. Boston lost in the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors last June, after a solid season, are again a heavy favorite going into the new season.

Toronto, as any Canadian basketball fan will recall, won the NBA championship in 2019, their first in franchise history, when they defeated the Golden State Warriors. Although the Raptors were eliminated in the first round last season, by the Philadelphia 76ers in six games, they remain one of the top clubs in the NBA.

An actual date for the Raptors versus Celtics match has yet to be confirmed, with sources hinting that it will take part sometime this October. Meanwhile, the Montreal Alliance will face the Saskatchewan Rattlers this Friday, July 29th, in their final home game of the season. Tickets for that contest, held at the Verdun auditorium, are still available.
