FC Supra’s inaugural home opener derailed by late Atlético Ottawa goal

The first ever Canadian Premier League game took place in the province of Quebec today, between the visiting Atlético Ottawa and newcomers FC Supra, and Montrealer’s came out in number. A capacity crowd of 4965 filled out the stands at CEPSUM stadium.

However the celebrations were cut short by Atlético Ottawa who found a way to score a goal in added time, spoiling FC Supra’s inaugural home match – much to the delight of the travelling Atlético Ottawa fans in attendance.

Perhaps it was a case of the jitters early on for FC Supra, playing their first ever home game to a packed house, but after a few minutes in the squad seemed to settle down and from that point they took the game over. Imploring a strong midfield, FC Supra found ways to run at the Ottawa defenders, causing them trouble for the entire game.

Atlético Ottawa seemed content to sit back and pass the ball around amongst themselves, which earned several jeers from the capacity crowd. Besides padding their possession statistics, this seemed to stem from the fact that CF Supra kept stripping them of the ball and countering with dangerous plays that largely came streaming down the sidelines, sending dangerous crosses in towards the Atlético Ottawa box.

At halftime, the two sides had played to a nil all draw while FC Supra had placed Atlético Ottawa firmly on their heels.

As the game progressed, Atlético Ottawa seemed to slowly figure out FC Supra’s attack and had been increasingly lucky to have escaped without conceding a goal – which was largely due to some incredible saves from goalkeeper Garissone Innocent, who was making his season debut with the squad.

While Atlético Ottawa seemed to grow into the match late in the second half, it was FC Supra that had the vast majority of chances all game long. Several shots looked certain to be going in before Innocent weaved his magic, keeping his squad in the game time after time. Despite throwing twenty-two shots at goal, the closest that came to scoring would be when Loïc Kwemi hit a ball that ricochet off the crossbar and stayed out.

A free-kick cross from Daniel Aguilar came into a crowded penalty area, and defender Tyr Duhaney-Walker rose above the rest to nod in the ball at the near post, as Atlético Ottawa stunned FC Supra with a goal that came out of nowhere. Ottawa had barely managed to earn a solid scoring chance up until this moment, and with just three minutes left of the five minutes of added time, they found themselves ahead of the score sheet.

Moments later, FC Surpa’s Wesley Wandje appeared to be fouled in the Ottawa box, but despite the complaints from teh crowd, the referee didn’t see it the same way even after reviewing the play on video replay.

“It’s a great feeling,” The goalscorer Duhaney-Walker told reporters. “We didn’t start the season off the way we wanted. It’s just a good way to boost morale for the team and show what we want to do for the rest of the season.”

For FC Supra, there are a plethora of positives they can take away with them despite leaving CEPSUM stadium without earning a point. They were without the better side today against the defending CPL Champions no less.

FC Supra will remain at home when they take on the Halifax Wanders next Friday, April 24 at CEPSUM (7 p.m. ET). Ottawa head back to the nation’s capital, where they’ll host Vancouver FC in their 2026 home opener also on Sunday, April 26th.
