CF Montreal acquire German forward Prince Owusu from Toronto FC

The shifting of players by CF Montreal continued today, as Laurent Courtois once again turned his attention towards Toronto FC, who themselves are in the midst of a line-up shuffle, to acquire German forward Prince Owusu.

Owusu , 28, had been in contract disputes with Toronto FC and was told that the club no longer saw him as part of their squad moving forward. Yet, Owusu and CF Montreal had already reached an agreement that will see the German forward with the team for the next two years.

Prince Owusu lead Toronto FC in scoring last season, scoring nine goals in 31 games, but despite that, found himself excluded from future plans at the club. Prior to having his rights dealt to CF Montreal, Owusu was scheduled to re-enter the MLS entry draft, but Montreal felt he would be a perfect fit for their club, which has been undergoing a significant reshaping since the latter portion of last season.

In exchange, Toronto FC will receive $100,000 in 2025 general allocation money and $75,000 in 2026 GAM for the right of first refusal for Owusu. The deal also includes $75,000 in conditional allocation money.

While Owusu had began last season on the right foot, notching 6 of his 9 markers on the season in the month of May alone, he cooled down as the season progressed. As a result Toronto FC confirmed back in November that it was passing on the 2025 contract option on the 28-year-old.

“We are strengthening our squad with a powerful striker, recognized for his physical attributes, ability to protect the ball, willingness to press defenders, and consistent offensive production,” Montreal president and CEO Gabriel Gervais said in a statement. “Prince brings a wealth of leadership and experience gained in Europe and MLS.”

CF Montreal itself had opted to move on from both Josef Martinez and Matias Coccaro, two fan-favorites of the Montreal faithful. This along with a slew of other moves to both bring new players in, and shape others out, has been the hot topic around the city of late.

In a social media post, Owusu said he had made “the difficult decision not to sign the new contract that was offered to me.”

CF Montreal’s pre-season training camp got underway this past weekend, and will feature a barrage of different faces from the team that finished the previous season.
