China’s Yiwen Chen put on a dazzling display in the preliminary round on the first day of competition at the World Cup Of Diving in Montreal.

World champion Yiwen Chen will be performing double duty in 3m and 3m synchro with her World Championship gold-medal winning partner Jia Chen.

In fact, the Chinese representatives were the highlight of the morning session, finishing first, second and third – however, only two athletes per country are able to advance, meaning that despite finishing third, Shan Lin won’t be moving on the finals.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Margo Erlam qualified in sixth position for Saturday’s finals. She will be joined by Sonya Palkhivala who qualifies despite finishing in thirteenth position.

Rounding out the top twelve heading to Saturday’s 3-meter finals are Maddison Keeney (Aus), Arzana Montano Vazquez (Mex), Alysha Koloi (Aus), Maria Fernanda Garcia Sixtos (Mex), Daniela Correa Zapata (Col), Kristina Ilinykh (Nab), Elizaveta Kuzina (Nab) and Michelle Heimberg (Swi).

All of which will return to the 3-meter board at Montreal’s Olympic stadium this Saturday, February 28th at 4:30pm.

These are the first competitions held at the historic Olympic Stadium, which hosted the Summer Olympics fifty years ago, since an arsonist protesting the high cost to repair the stadiums roof set fire to the facilities just outside the pool area. Extensive repairs were needed, including cleaning nine kilometers of ventilation ducts which also prevented Montreal from hosting the 2025 World Aquatics World Cup.

While construction on the roof is on going, competition is able to return to the pools.
