STM bus fares remain the same despite reduced service
Today, the first weekday of the latest STM public transit strike, awakened people to the harsh reality that despite seriously depleted reduced service – bus fares remain the same.
A monthly pass for the Montreal public transit system will run you $14.50, despite the fact that two strikes are now underway. The CSN maintenance workers union strike will result in rush hour only service, while the drivers union strike will see three full days without any service at all – and the cities commuters are not happy about it one bit.

Rush hour buses and metros are now overfilled, leaving would-be passengers stranded on train platforms or out in the cold, waiting for another bus that may or may not come.
While it is one thing to strike for better working conditions; those strikes shouldn’t ever harm the regular citizens of the city. These strikes are harmful to the well being of Montrealer’s who are already feeling the pinch of a terrible federal government, tariffs, increased food prices and a housing crisis, with nothing in sight to say things are going to get better any time soon. Adding further difficulty for working class people to get to work and students to get to class is simply disgraceful.
Why the STM and CSN have chosen to target everyday citizens instead of those that make decisions, the higher ups that won’t be effected as they cruise about town in their cars, is baffling.
A smarter way to protest, would have been to refuse to take transit fares as has been the case in France and Japan in recent years, which puts the pressure on the STM to come to terms with the unions as they take the financial hit of the strikes. The people shouldn’t be the ones being punished. Not now, not ever.

One thing is for certain; while the STM and CSN masquerade this new strike as for the people – the only people it effects are the working class people trying to get to work in a time or peril and strife where financial hardships are very real, when food costs and rental prices are at a criminal level, and this strike will only make their lives harder, while the affluent might be slightly annoyed by the increased traffic on the roads, at best.
There will be no service on November 15th or 16th, and limited reduced service until November 28th.
