CF Montreal apologizes to fans, promises rebuild following disastrous season.
CF Montreal has issued a letter on its social media platforms, in which it apologizes to its fans for a disastrous season and promises action going forward. In the letter, which was signed by team president Gervais, and , there is mention of a rebuild of its squad – but hold on, there’s a catch.
First, Gervais said at the end of May, that it would take ” two or even three transfer windows to rebuild the roster,” which is a considerable amount of time. Moreover, he stated that CF Montreal’s rebuild would “rely on youth, rather than on prestigious, and above all, expensive acquisitions”.

Reading between the lines, this is rebuild is going to be a long drawn out process for the team that is already last in the league and spends the least amount on its roster already. While this has been a round season, with just three wins under their belts – things are about to get a whole lot worse.
“We want to build with the youth, with local players, and supervise them,” said Gervais.
Having acquired eighteen year old Olger Escobar, who has yet to play even a hundred minutes in the MLS so far, is a strong stepping stone towards building through youth, but several more moves and acquisitions would surely need to be made to make this plan a reality.
Montreal has not had a true star player since Didier Drogba departed the team ahead of the 2017 season – and it would seem that the drought is going to continue.
“Dear fans,
We have not met the standards we set for ourselves, nor those you have the right to expect. That is why we felt the need to communicate with you directly today.
We share your dissatisfaction with the Club’s results, and it is our responsibility to build a winning team that we can all be proud of.
That is why we have decided to undertake a rebuild and launch a new chapter at CF Montréal. A chapter based on ambition and pride. A new era with victory at the heart of our sporting ambitions, while also honoring our rich history and the connection with you, our 12th player.
We know that trust is regained through actions. As such, during the upcoming transfer windows, you will see concrete steps, a committed team, and strong initiatives aimed at rebuilding, together, a Club that deserves your loyalty.”
Whether or not CF Montreal fans are patient enough to undergo the type of rebuilding process that the club are hinting at though, remains to be seen.
Especially if CF Montreal expects to rebuild through local youth, and youth only, this could lead to the team being at the bottom of the league for quite some time, without any blue chip prospects coming through what is already a rather lacking youth building system. CF Montreal are one of the few MLS clubs that don’t have an MLS Next franchise, which is probably where a rebuild of this magnitude should start.

For now, CF Montreal can only really focus on the upcoming Leagues Cup, having already been eliminated from the Canadian Championship and with the MLS playoffs too far out of reach, the Leagues Cup is CF Montreal’s last hope at salvation of this shipwreck of a season.
CF Montreal are next in action on July 25th when they travel to Massachusetts to take on the New England Revolution.
