The Harlem Globetrotters come from behind to beat the Washington Generals at the Bell Center

The Harlem Globetrotters extended their wining-streak over the Washington Generals tonight at the Bell Center in Montreal tonight, pulling out all the tricks in order to do so.

However, the Globetrotters needed some last second heroics, by way over a buzzer beating slam dunk, to complete a comeback victory over the Generals. The dunk in question, moved the Harlem Globetrotters to a 107 to 105 win.

Harlem found themselves over confident, attempting three and four (!!) point shots from half-court, while the Generals paced themselves and scored multiple buckets on their counter attacks and the Globetrotters wayward shots continue to rain down, sometimes hitting their mark and sometimes not.

The Globetrotters also seemed more intent on showboating to the crowd at the Bell Center that also cost them on the scoreboard. It’s a good thing then, that this and all their games are exhibition matches that are about bringing love and positivity to whichever arena they might be playing in on any given night. Pranks upon pranks, and a referee that is content to just dance the night away while the shenanigan’s are taking place all across the court. When you think about it, isn’t that all referees anyway!?!

While the action is light hearted, the amount of skill on display is dazzling. From incredible dribbling displays and sinking ludicrously long buckets and their trademark tradition spinning of balls on their fingers tips – oh and that one cat that spin a basketball on top of another spinning basketball, the Harlem Globetrotters are a great night out for the family. There’s something for everyone, whether those that come out are sports fans or not. Skills. Comedy. Pantomime and of course, history, heritage and tradition.

The Harlem Globetrotters are a staple of Americana.

This current world tour of exhibition games, all of which are played against the Washington Generals, is in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Globetrotters, who have now been bringing joy and laughter to children of all ages across the, well, globe, for a century now. Honestly, this is the most fun that can be had with a basketball or any other ball or even puck. Through countless interactions with the crowd, especially the youngsters in attendance, the Globetrotters included a brigade of children in their show – no doubt leaving them with memories they’ll not soon forget.

This, of course, is more akin to the WWE then it is to an NBA game, but it is so much more than just a game. This is a sports pantomime that encompasses the love for the game of basketball and brings laughter and joy to a world that is shockingly more and more in disarray as the days pass. To that end, the Harlem Globetrotters are a miracle. A century in, and still the greatest sporting event on earth.

Tonight’s loss leaves the Washington Generals with a record of 3 wins and 18,000 loses to the Harlem Globetrotters. Furthermore, the Generals are now winless against the Globetrotters since… 1971. Maybe they’ll get ’em next time.

I feel some level of respect has to be shown to the Washington Generals as well. They are as much a part of the package – the bad guys, if you will, but as vital a component to these fantastic events as the Globetrotters themselves. So, here’s to you, Washington Generals. May you finally end your atrocious losing streak sometime soon.

The Harlem Globetrotters and the Washington Generals will renew their rivalry tomorrow at Place Bell in Laval – will this be the night the Generals secure themselves a much needed win? Show up, find out!
