Late Cavalry goal sinks FC Supra in Laval

Cavalry outshine FC Supra on a cloudy Laval afternoon

Calgary Cavalry FC and FC Supra met at Laval’s Stade Boreale where the Supra will be spending the majority of their home games at this season – and last minute heroics from the visiting team once more dominate the storyline.

Unlike FC Supra’s heartbreaking loss to Atletico Ottawa at CEPSUM, where the Quebecers dominated the entire match, only to be beaten on a free kick, this afternoons match was a lot more equal in terms of play.

Cavalry FC were strong on the ball throughout the contest, forcing FC Supra to play their game – yet the results weren’t coming until a strange call with two minutes to go in regulation time.

There has been a lot of chatter about the newly implemented offside rules in the Canadian Premier League, but today’s match showed something that the league needs to address. FVS. A video review system developed in collaboration with FIFA.

Cavalry FC used the FVS to successfully earn themselves a penalty kick, that they converted into the only goal of the game when Tobias Warschewski slotted a low ball inside the left post.

So far, so good.

Minutes later, referee Fabrizio Stasolla called a penalty against Cavalry FC, that they challenged and had reversed, only for FC Supra to challenge the challenge and, of course, lose the appeal. How can a challenge be challenged in the first place?

While this earned a good chuckle from the crowd, it is hard to take this whole FVS approach seriously.

In the 90th plus 13th minutes, Alessandro Biello of FC Supra was shown a straight red card during a melee amongst players and the official. Since there wasn’t any obvious reason for the card, it can be assumed that Biello might have said something unsavory.

In all, the referee handed out a barrage of cards; six yellows and a red to FC Supra and a single yellow to the Cavalry.

For FC Supra, frustration seems to have boiled over for the fledgling squad who are still just a handful of games into their Canadian Premier League journey – but a chaotic series of events from the officials was certainly the catalyst of that.
