Concordia nets five, shuts out Nipissing at home

The Stingers hosted the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday with a whole lot of good intentions in their hearts. You see, this games was to feature a teddy bear toss upon Concordia’s first goal. The bears were to collected up, cleaned, and donated as gifts to under privileged kids across the city. A great initiative and something most in attendance contributed to.

While the fans were in a generous mood, so to where the Concordia Stingers who came out eager to throw their weight around with big hits, and fill their opponents net with pucks – and they did both with reckless abandon.

The Stingers tallied five convincing goals and dominated the play completely on their way to a five to nothing shut out over the opposing Nipissing Lakers. With the win, the red hot Stingers remain near the top of the standings, currently sitting snuggly in second position. A spot they’ll carry over into the next year as this is their final home game of 2024.

Sean Larochelle scored twice and added an assist, Blake Richardson also hit the back of the net while Mikael Huchette and defenseman Nathan Lavoie each tallied a goal and an assist.

This was a fairly undisciplined game from both squads, that saw a combined total of sixteen penalty minutes through the first two periods – with the last two tallies coming on the power play for the Stingers. (Larochelle and Huchette)

Goaltender Nikolas Hurtubise only faced made nine shots, turning them all away to earn his second shutout this season.

In a bizarre twist, the game didn’t resume for the third period due to an issue with the condition of the ice that the referees deemed unsafe, and the game was called off. Issues with the zamboni continuously stalling while cleaning the ice between periods is believed to have been the reason for the ice issues, although those close to the team didn’t want to go on record as saying so.

While this is most certainly not the sort of thing you see every day, and with the Stingers already ahead by five goals by the time the game was called, the two teams agreed that the Stingers were the winners. The things you see.

Men’s hockey will be back at the Ed Meagher Arena on Friday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. to face the Windsor Lancers.
