CF Montreal still has a chance at qualifying at Leagues Cup, albeit slim
Eighteen teams from the MLS and eighteen from Liga MX are currently dueling it out in hopes of reaching the knockout stage at the 2025 Leagues Cup – and while several teams have already been mathematically eliminated – CF Montreal are still hanging in with a chance at advancing, albeit a slim one.
CF Montreal have earned two points through team games so far, while playing arguably their best soccer of the season in those team games. They beat Club León in their first match last week on penalties before falling to last year’s Liga MX champions Club Deportivo Toluca on their second game.

A win tomorrow night over Club Puebla, at Stade Saputo in regulation time would put them on five points and technically in one of the four advancing spots – but several teams, including powerhouse Inter Miami, could yet jump them in the standings. While Messi is all but ruled out for their third and final group stage game with what the team are describing as a minor muscle injury, a lot of things would have to go right for CF Montreal to advance.
But there’s a chance…
However, CF Montreal will have to find a way to win without star striker Prince Owusu, whose outburst aimed at the referee after the final whistle versus Club Deportivo Toluca earned him a red card and a ban from Montreal’s final match-up against Club Puebla. Owusu has ten goals in his last ten games for CF Montreal, and his absence will be felt tomorrow night.
The good news is that CF Montreal seem to have figure out their season long woes are are trending upwards – a tad too late for it make it real impact, which is what makes this chance at the Leagues Cup so special. It is, in a way, a chance at redeeming an all but lost season.
