Coeur De Pirate returns to Montreal after several years
Tonight, a capacity crowd swarmed to the Mtelus to welcome Coeur De Pirate and Laraw, a pair of local artists that are at opposite ends of their careers. While Coeur De Pirate has been around for a considerable amount of time – she hasn’t been overly active, at least not here in Montreal. Laraw, on the other hand, at in the early stages of their career and certainly gained some attention after tonight’s performance.
Roughly two months ago, Coeur De Pirate released a brand new album titled Cavale, and the entire record was played throughout the evening. This marks her first recordings in four years, which also represents the biggest gap between records in her career thus far. And obviously, Montreal has been thirsting for these new tunes for quite some time.

A full house tonight, on a typical Montreal eve where all manor of entertainment can be found, shows that Coeur De Pirate is the hot ticket, and both Coeur De Pirate and Laraw were primed and ready to set the night alight.
Laraw

I imagine the lack of space on the stage that had been allotted to Laraw made for difficult circumstances for the duette to introduce themselves to the Montreal music scene. Perched at the edge of the large stage, about two or feet three from plummeting to the hard concrete gap below them that we refer to as the photographer pit, and with a stage-wide curtain behind them, covering whatever was to be the scenery for the headlining Coeur De Pirate, can’t have been easy.
However, neither these limitations nor any stage fright that might have been occurring in this young duettes collective head were noticeable, as the pair champion their alternative pop sounds to a full room of people that probably had never heard of them beforehand.
Certainly, judging by the audience’s response as she sang about the trials and tribulations of her quarter-life crisis, largely taken from for debut record titled Quarter Life Crisis, Laraw is a name that people will be looking into more closely following this fantastic evening of music. Her social media presence should see a steady increase, let’s say.
Being a native Montrealer, and since her second release, an EP titled J’ai quitté le Heartbreak Club, which was released earlier this year, naturally meant that her set would feature both English and French tracks – which no doubt further caught the ear of those in attendance tonight.
There is no doubt that tonight can be considered a success for Laraw.
Coeur De Pirate

While not fully disclosed, and nor she it be, a part of the reason why Coeur De Pirate has been absent of late has to due with personal life, where she has had some medical issues to attend to. Surely, having two young children at home also makes things a little difficult for a performing artist.
Irregardless, the good news is that not only has Coeur De Pirate returned, she looked fantastic and in high spirits, which hopefully means that whatever woes were irking her, have been defeated and left behind her in the dusts of time.
Tonight began a fresh new chapter on a fresh sheet of paper but with those have loved her on past pages still around to cheer on this new chrysalis as she rose from her anchors like a phoenix from the ashes of her aliments. Coeur De Pirate is back and better than ever.
Dressed in a flowing black cloak, with her long golden hair adding contrast to the look, she shone brightly. Behind her, was what the curtain had obscured from its audience – which tallied up to but a grand piano, a drum set hidden in the darkness and the occasional shadowy outline of a session musician – and a giant circular projector screen that often looked as if a full moon had come down for the night sky to aluminate this wonder performance.
Opening the set, following a quick welcoming of “bonjour Montreal”, which was vigorously returned right back at her, began the evenings first number; Laisse Moi Pleurer. Already, the warmth was gushing about the Mtelus, as a massive wave of applause broke out. From there, Coeur de Pirate sang Un Autre Regret, the first song to be played from her newest recording, Cavale. At that was followed up with an older hit, Drapeau Blanc, which now fully had everyone in the room in an uproar.
There where also many moments where Coeur De Pirate danced about, in contemporary fashion, bringing the expression of movement and dance to her music in a way that one simply wouldn’t get from their sofas and home stereo systems. It offered another element to her sound, a stunning visual with that aforementioned giant moon illuminated behind her, that helped tell the tale and get the stories behind the lyrics better understood.
This was far more than a simple concert; this was a work of theatrical art. This, was nothing less than an incredible evening.

It would seem that Montreal will be seeing more from Coeur De Pirate in the not so distant future, as it was teased that following this current Canadian tour, she would be heading to Europe for a tour and would embark on another next year, that will see Coeur De Pirate play Montreal again next summer.
If that upcoming show is anything like this one tonight; Montreal will once more be in for a treat!
