Latifah Abdu wants to leave Montreal Roses FC

With just six games remaining in the inaugural season of the Northern Super League, Montreal Roses FC star forward and leading scorer Latifah Abdu has made it clear she wishes to play elsewhere.

Abdu has requested that she be released from her contract, a spokesperson for the team said on Wednesday, despite the teams plan to exercise an option in her contract for the 2026 season. With the transfer window set to close on August 31st, the Roses say they are hard at work trying to fulfill Abdu’s wishes.

Abdu, 23, is a native of Dollard-des-Ormeaux located on the west island of Montreal, has  said she wanted “to continue her career in an environment better suited to her personal goals and playing style.”

In their debut season in the brand new league, the Montreal Roses FC have combined for seventeen goals – six of which have come from Abdu. She was one of the first signings made by the fledgling team in December 2024, coming back to Montreal after four years playing in the top-flight women’s league in France.

“We strongly believe that every player should be able to thrive in an environment that reflects who they are. When an athlete clearly expresses a desire for change, our role is to support them and help prepare the next steps in their career,” Marinette Pichon, sporting director of the Roses, said in a team statement.

“Discussions between Latifah’s representatives and the club’s sporting management are ongoing to ensure a smooth transition.”

Replacing Latifah Abdu will be a monstrous task with such little time remaining in the transfer window, and so close to the end of the season as well.

The Roses are currently tied for second place in the six-team Northern Super League, with nine games remaining in the schedule, including a match against the Calgary Wild Saturday at Stade Boréale.
