Lia Cho breaks Canadian junior women’s record Canadian Nationals

At just 12 years of age, Calgary’s Lia Cho is already turning heads from coast to coast. On Friday, at the 2025 National Skating Championship in Laval, Quebec – Cho skated to a standing ovation, on her way to setting a new Canadian record.

In fact, she beat her own record in setting this new Canadian junior women’s record. On December 1, 2024, Cho set her first record of 186.50 she set at the Skate Canada Challenge in Winnipeg, and beat that by scoring 188.79 in Laval. The record had previous been held by fellow Calgarian Kaiya Ruiter who scored 179.92 to set her record in 2021.

Ksenia Krouzkevitch of Oakville, Ontario had skated a wonderful program, and had just edged out local sweetheart Sandrine Blais of Sherbrooke, Quebec, when the final skater of the contest took to the ice. That, of course being Lia Cho, who at just 4’5″ in height, put one of the most dominant displays the woman’s junior competitions have ever seen. Cho had not only beaten out some tough competition, she had done so more than thirty points over second-place Krouzkevitch.

Cho strives every day to better herself, not for the accolades but for the love of the sport.

“I really liked my program, and I’d like to thank everyone who was here today. The volunteers, the spectators, and the people who cheered me on. It was the biggest crowd I’ve ever skated in front of, and it felt amazing!” said Cho, who ended the day with an impressive 188.79 points. “For me, it’s not about breaking records. It’s about showing how much I love my sport. I wanted everyone to see what I’ve been working on in training, and I’m proud of my performance.”

The road ahead appears to be one that leads Cho to greatness, as her performances so far at such a young age already have some proclaiming her a prodigy of the sport she loves.

Cho won’t be able to test herself internationally for quite some time because she’s only eligible for the world junior championships in 2027.
