The Greensboro Swarm defeated the Montreal Nets by a single point in overtime

The Long Island Nets returned to Laval tonight, to once again transform into the Montreal Nets, and face off against the Greensboro Swarm. Since their first stint as the Montreal Nets, or Les Nets, in late January, the Long Island Nets have been on a bit of a downward trajectory, losing four straight games after splitting a pair against the Toronto Raptors 905 at Place Bell in Laval.

Les Nets were looking to avenge a 104 – 98 loss to the Swarm, the NBA G League associate of the Charlotte Hornets, on January 29th, and end their four game skid – and came within a hair of doing exactly that, but fate had other plans for team.

As is nearly always the case in basketball, this was a back and fourth affair, with both teams going on runs and surrendering runs – such is the nature of the game. Some though, and more tightly contested than others, and tonight’s contest most certainly fell into the latter category.

The first quarter was as close as a basketball game could get, as the score was tied on three separate occasions in the opening twelve minutes of play. At the end of the quarter, the Swarm carried a slender four-point lead, and the second period would see the Nets storm back and open the game up. Shooting 45.2 percent, the Nets dominated play for the latter portion of the first half. The Nets took a six-point lead into the dressing room at half-time.

The third quarter was even stronger for the Nets, who continued where they had left off, shooting 52.6 percent, and closing out the quarter ahead by five points. But the Swarm weren’t yet done, and they stormed back into the game with a massive final frame, lead by Reggie Perry. The Swarm held a slight lead with seconds to go in the game, when Trevon Scott hit a buzzer-beating three point shot to tie the game in the dying moments of the contest, and got everyone in the building up on their feet, forcing overtime as the momentum looked to have fully swung towards the Nets.

Overtime began well for Long Island, but would soon swing in the opposite direction. Ultimately, it would come down to just one point – and it fell for the Greensboro Swarm, who took the match by a score of 117-116, successfully defeating the Nets for the second in as many weeks.

While Reggie Perry was instrumental for the Greensboro Swarm, potting 26 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four assists, one steal and one block – and Marcus Garrett put up 21 points, three rebounds and five assists, there were six Nets who put up double-digits in this match-up.

Kendall Brown, shot for 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Mark Armstrong recorded 21 points, two rebounds, four assists and one steal , Jordan Minor added a double-double with 20 points and 17 rebounds to go along with two assists and one block. Guard Tyson Etienne posted 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals while Trevon Scott notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in addition to two assists and one steal off the bench. Brooklyn assignee Dariq Whitehead added 13 points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals.

Despite the losses, the Long Island Nets are playing quality ball – luck just hasn’t been on their side of late.

The Montreal Nets will be back in action against the Delaware Blue Coats on February 8 at 3:00 p.m. The Nets will then return to Place Bell for two final games against the Memphis Hustle who will visit on March 13th and 14th and tickets to all three games are on sale now. Meanwhile, the Greensboro Swarm will travel to face Sioux Falls Skyforce on Saturday, February 8th.

Then, the Nets will return for their final two Montreal matches on March 13th and 14th when they square off against the Memphis Hustle, the NBA G League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies, of course, were originally the other Canadian team that came into the league at the same time as the Toronto Raptors. Sadly, Vancouver lost their team to Memphis – and Canada has had just the NBA team ever since.
